Eating out in New Orleans is taken very seriously indeed, and is
often more hotly debated and discussed than religion or politics.
Hunting down the best po’boy, gumbo or chef is almost an
occupation in itself, with countless hours being constantly devoted
to the cause. As is to be expected from a city of its caliber,
every food, taste and preference is catered for. The three main
types of eateries can be described as old-line, nouvelle and neighborhood.
The old-line are generally family owned with time-honored traditions
and recipes. The nouvelle restaurants are of the more contemporary
type, rivaling those of New York and San Francisco. The neighborhood
joints are the down to earth, no frills, no dress code, no reservations
and great food. The following is just a short list of some recommended
places to go, but by no means the definitive guide. It is advised
that you call in advance to check availability and allowances for
children. The legal age for alcohol consumption is 21, so if in
doubt bring a good form of photograph identification with you.
