This fantastic museum is located at 533 Royal Street and makes for
a fascinating, cheap family day out. Operating on a non-profit
basis, the building is steeped in history lessons. Intriguing primary
source materials such as Iberville’s request to establish
a colony and the Louisiana Purchase documents, can be seen during
one of the several tours which are expertly led by volunteering
guides. Another fascinating tour is that of the benefactors’ renovated
townhouse. The exhibit space on the 1st floor is free and celebrates
the Louisiana Purchase bicentennial of 2003.
If you are thinking of visiting New Orleans and like a little bit
of history, then the Historic New Orleans Collection will definitely
be of interest to you. It takes you through the city’s past,
celebrating all the major events along its journey, and although
educating, is also very interesting and enjoyable. Admission is very
reasonable (somewhere in the region of 4$) and the opening hours
are Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 3pm. It is advised to phone in
advance to check if there are any special events planned. There are
plenty of places nearby for refreshments.
