Louis Armstrong was born in 1901 and grew up in an area known as
back o’ town around Liberty and Perdido Sts. He was sent
to reform school at the tender age of 12. It was here that his
musical talent really began to shine through. He first learned
to play the bugle and then moved on to the cornet, the instrument
for which he is most famed for. Before he came of age, Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong
held down various jobs to keep himself going, including unloading
banana boats and delivering coal and milk. In 1922 he joined King
Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band in Chicago. It was the tutelage
of King Oliver and Kid Ory that helped make him so special. He
later moved to New York City and embarked on a solo career which
was to eventually make him world renowned. He returned home to
New Orleans in 1931 as a massive star and was honored as King of
the Zulus. This was a Mardi Gras krewe, a club that sponsors Mardi
Gras parades and other events. Louis Armstrong died in 1971, but
he left behind an indelible mark, not just on his home town, but
worldwide.
