Society & Culture

The general philosophy on life in New Orleans is to have as good a time as possible. The three core ingredients for this are good food, good drink and plenty of it, and good conversation. The local people are renowned for chatting to anyone and everyone who’ll listen, reaming off stories unapologetically masked as history. They are really remarkably outgoing with very few inhibitions. It is largely due to this unselfconscious attitude that the city boasts a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately there tends to be a downside to this. The laid back way of life means that nothing gets done in a rush or indeed on time. It can be quite frustrating waiting for a meal or repairs to be done. Over a century ago, the Americans and the Creoles clashed over this lack of industriousness and the Creoles won.
The city is comprised of 62% proper African Americans, 35% whites and 3% Hispanics. Although the distribution of wealth and power is quite unbalanced, the city does enjoy an unusual position in modern race relations. This has come about due to a group of antebellum freed slaves and children of mixed relationships, known as ‘free people of color’. It is certainly worth a visit to New Orleans just to sample this very unique atmosphere.
